Musical Theatre Christmas

It's happened. The Tony awards have arrived.

Otherwise known as Musical Theatre Christmas, The Tony's are the biggest event on and off Broadway. Being one of those stagey folk myself; I thought I'd have a ramble on my experiences as a performer, on the eve of The Tonys.

Please don't think I'm being pretentious, my experience is limited but has been thorough!

1. The People

It has to be said, as soon as you join a cast, theatre group etc, the normal boundaries of a new friendship are non-existent. Within a rehearsal or two, you can pretty much guarantee if you are having a lil sing-song, someone will harmonise with you. It's a given that you can sing all of the parts of "One Day More". You will have probably seen 65% of your cast half naked, or more often than not, completely starkers.

You are not just friends. You are family.

2. The Costumes

Costumes are either your dream come true, or your worst nightmare.  They are dependent on the calibre of the show, but are usually ill-fitting and make you look like a potato stuffed into a dress. Yet when you step onto stage in full costume and make-up, there is no better feeling. As "The Witch" in INTW, we had a phenomenal costume department, and they brought the show to life. Though ripping off a pinned in wig for a 30 second quick change whilst three people scrub your "wrinkles" off, is what you would call, a challenge.

3. The Discipline

It's a common misconception that the performing arts are "easy". Tell me how a 10am-10pm day full of physically exhausting dance numbers, vocal arrangement and blocking is easy, and I will happily invite you to give it a try. As performers, we take this shit seriously. To tell a story, and to do it well, takes a labour of love. There have been times where I've sat in rehearsal and questioned why I couldn't have chosen knitting as a hobby, but really, there is nothing in the world that I love more.

Just a little post for this week. I'm getting a bit slow on the whole "regularity" aspect!

I do want to put a massive thank you out to all the wonderful, hilarious and hugely talented people I've met through doing shows. We've created some amazing stuff, and I adore you all! You know who you are! Never have I felt more accepted and comfortable, and that's down to you.

If you're interested in any of the Performing Arts companies and collectives mentioned, I'm very happy to give you any info if you leave a comment below. :)

Thanks for reading!

Helena's American Adventure | Where to eat in NYC & Chicago

Hey guys! I thought I'd start off September with a little series of posts. It's named with an appropriate level of cheesiness, " Helena's American Adventure ". I was lucky enough to be able to explore New York and Chicago with my Dad, and want to share my thoughts on my trip across the pond. I make no shame of the fact that I am a spoilt little Daddy's girl. I am provided for (and then some) by my Dad extraordinarily, and need to start this series off by thanking him, as it is hard to put into words how grateful I am for such an amazing holiday, and Dad in general.  We all love food, right? So to start off, I thought I'd show you some of my favourite places to eat in New York and Chicago. My dad and I are very much foodies, so rest assured you won't be let down if you do end up paying them a visit! P.S. A quick disclaimer, I am not writing this to show off, brag, etc about anything. I am so fortunate and grateful to have experien...

Thoughts on failure | Helena Busia

I have always had a fear of failing.   I've found it to be my greatest motivator, and greatest curse, throughout my life. I'm pretty confident in estimating where this fear stemmed from. I narrowly missed ( And I mean narrowly- 1 bloody mark! Not that I'm bitter or anything... ) the pass mark for the "Eleven Plus" exam. Just like that, I differed to all of my classmates who were deemed "worthy" of an education that I, somehow, was not deserving of. There, within that pale envelope, was the black and white proof that I was a failure.  Ever since then, I have strived for near perfection, fixated on never having to experience that crushing feeling ever again . It's been a motivator throughout my life, providing me with the mantra "Why bother doing it if it's not done well". Largely, it's worked! Full marks in my English coursework and an excellent (bar maths!)  academic record, I have found my perfectionism to work out ve...

Where to eat in Austin | Helena Busia

Hello! I haven't written in eons, I am aware. Rather than bore you with a lame list of excuses, I'll just give you one- I started university! I have been far too busy necking jägerbombs and eating cheesy chips and gravy to blog. I do apologise. I was fortunate (*cough* spoilt *cough*) enough to go on another wonderful holiday with my Dad this summer. We went to Austin Texas, and New York City. Of course, we ate wonderful meals, and I thought I could do a little guide for anyone visiting Austin, as I think it's a really underrated place to visit, and has incredible food.  It goes without saying that I have the best, most generous, kind, incredible Dad in the world (Sorry bout it). So I have to say a huge thank you to him for taking me on an amazing trip. Dad, I love you.  So without further ado, here are my thoughts on where you should eat in Austin. 1.
